WHAT IS EYELID SURGERY?

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the eyelids. Surgery can be performed on either the upper or lower lids, or both.

  • Non-smokers
  • Individuals with a positive outlook and specific goals in mind for eyelid surgery
  • Individuals without serious eye conditions

Remember, the eyelids are part of the face. The appearance of a drooping upper lid may also be due to relaxation of the forehead skin and eyebrow. Sometimes a drooping eyelid is caused by stretching an upper eyelid muscle, called the levator.

THE EXPERIENCE

This is a simple procedure performed in our accredited office while you are awake under general anesthesia. This procedure can take up to a half hour to 2 hours, depending if both upper and lower eyelids are being treated.

Most patients return to work 4-7 days after their procedure while avoiding strenuous activities. Immediately after your surgery, it’s recommended to take a short rest, usually 12 hours, with general recovery in the following days.

Results from upper eyelid surgery can last 10 years or more, and in many cases, are permanent. Lower eyelid surgery results are also long-lasting, often two decades or more, especially when fat is removed.

Blepharoplasty candidates often have droopy eyelids, under-eye bags, or excess skin that give them a tired appearance. While many patients are in their mid-40s or older, younger individuals may qualify based on genetics and eyelid structure.

Blepharoplasty is generally not considered painful. Most patients experience mild discomfort, tightness, or irritation similar to dry eyes. This is easily managed with over the counter pain relievers and eye drops.

Yes, upper blepharoplasty can improve vision if excess skin blocks your sight. However, if you pass your state’s driver vision test, insurance often denies coverage. While results are lasting, insurance approval is rare.
