EAR SURGERY | OTOPLASTY
EAR SURGERY IN CLEVELAND
Ears continue to grow as we age and disrupt facial harmony. Many people notice that their ears are out of balance with the rest of their face. They often attempt to camouflage their ears with creative hair styles or other means. If you are unhappy with the size of your ears, or the projection of your ears, you’re a candidate for otoplasty. We provide an in-office procedure to improve ear shape, and ear size, known as “ear pinning.”

WHAT IS OTOPLASTY?
Since the ears are located towards the middle of the face, any deformity or asymmetry becomes very noticeable. Otoplasty (cosmetic ear surgery) can be performed for both deformities originating at birth, or due to trauma.
Protruding ears often become a source of teasing and ridicule during childhood; this can lead to unnecessary emotional strain. The primary reason for operating on prominent ears is to eliminate the psychological effect that the ear deformity produces.
Commonly, the protruding ear is due to inadequate formation of the natural folds or increased projection from the scalp. Since ear deformities occur in different forms, the surgical technique varies accordingly. The goal of otoplasty is to recreate the contour of the folds and normalize the ear-scalp distance.

OTOPLASTY PATIENT TESTIMONIAL
Meet Jason, 6
Cleveland Cavaliers fan and grandson
BEFORE
“Children can be cruel with their honesty.”
Jason is a young energetic boy. He loves making new friends and celebrating the Cavs’ victories with his family. Before the procedure, Jason had been despondent. He didn’t want to go to school or play with his friends. His grandmother identified the problem and sought out Dr. Diamantis’s help.
Jason’s Recommended Treatments
- OTOPLASTY to shape the ears and flatten the over projected ear bilaterally. The objective is to bring facial balance.
“Jason’s personality and love for his friends returned.” – Grandmother
Before the procedure, Jason’s grandmother noticed he did not want to go to school. After further interaction, Jason admitted that the children at school were “making fun of him” because of his large ears. Dr. Diamantis recommended immediate intervention to address this issue before Jason entered his formative years.
AFTER
EAR SURGERY EXPERIENCE
During otoplasty, the folds of the ear that are readily seen from the front, are accessed from behind, so that the surgical incision is made on the backside of the ear where no one will easily notice. The ears are recreated by carefully placing internal stitches.
Otoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia and requires a full healing time of 10-14 days. However, patients will often return to work the next day. To protect the surgical correction, sweatbands or beanie hats are worn during the healing period. Incision and sutures are placed behind the ear to avoid visibility. Post-operative discomfort is easily controlled with prescription pain medication.
