WHAT IS A CHEMICAL PEEL?

Cleveland Cosmetic Surgery uses a chemical solution to smooth your skin texture by removing the outer layer of damaged skin. Although this procedure is used mostly on the face, they can also be used to improve the skin on your neck and hands.

A chemical peel is one of the least invasive ways to improve the appearance of your skin and skin texture. Sun exposure, acne, we’re just getting older can leave your skin texture and tone uneven, wrinkled, spotted or scarred.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF CHEMICAL PEELING

Cleveland Cosmetic Surgery offers three basic types of peels. The peel is categorized according to the skin depth of the rejuvenation.

LIGHT CHEMICAL PEEL

This kind of peel removes just the outer layer of skin in the light exfoliation and results in a healthier glow.

Dr. Diamantis will use a combination of alpha hydroxy acid and beta hydroxy acid. The more common names include glycolic acid peels, lactic acid peels and maleic acid.

All these chemicals are the mildest choices. We recommend you repeat these treatments to achieve your desired results.

MEDIUM CHEMICAL PEEL

The chemicals used for this type of peel will remove skin cells from both the outer layer and upper part of your middle layer of skin.

Dr. Diamantis will use trichloroacetic acid, sometimes used in combination with glycolic acid. You may repeat this procedure every few months to maintain your new glowing skin.

When (TCA) a trichloroacetic acid is used in this procedure, you’ll experience some redness, stinging and skin crusting just like a laser treatment.

DEEP CHEMICAL PEEL

If you have deeper facial wrinkles, skin that’s damaged by sun, scars, areas that appear blotchy, or even pre-cancerous growth, deep facial treatments might be the right choice for you.

For this procedure at Cleveland Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Diamantis will use the strongest chemical called phenol to penetrate down to the lower dermal layer of your skin. For this type of peel, you may need a local anesthetic with IV sedation to manage any discomfort.

This treatment may involve some sort of pre-treatment prescribed by Dr. Diamantis. This will prepare your skin for the peel and speed up the healing process. Pretreatment includes use of a retinoic acid cream or gel – a prescription medication that is derived from vitamin A. This works to thin out the skin’s surface layer, allowing the chemical solution of phenol to penetrate more evenly and deeply.

The chemical used in this treatment, phenol, will lighten the skin that’s treated. This is why it is ideal to treat dark under eye circles with a phenol peel. One treatment with a deep chemical peel will produce long lasting and dramatic results that can last up to 10 years.

WHO ARE GOOD CANDIDATES FOR A CHEMICAL PEEL?

Most patients that come to Cleveland Cosmetic Surgery are helped by this procedure. It is a safe and highly rewarding procedure. However, you may not be a good candidate for chemical peeling if you have the following:

  • A history of abnormal skin scarring
  • Abnormal pigmentation
  • Caribbean or Asian skin
  • Facial warts
  • Used Accutane within the last year
